Now or Later

paul hoan zeidler · June 20, 2023 certified reviewer
Some of the best actors in L.A. intimate theater bond together in a strong, well-directed ensemble to elevate Christopher Shinn's unfocused political drama. This resourceful production of NOW OR LATER is well worth seeing. ... full review

Oh, Lorraine!

paul hoan zeidler · June 20, 2023 certified reviewer
In our picky, swipe-left era of dating apps and half-assed relationship advice, it's a distinct pleasure to take in a play where opposites still attract. One that's willing to stand its lonely ground and claim there's someone for everyone no matter how rocky their past has been and their future may be. That OH, LORRAINE does it with a stampede of laughs makes this marvelous production a must-see.... full review

Kick Boom Theatre’s previous production, SCARLETT FEVER, made my list for the Ten Best L.A. theatre shows of the 2018-19 season, the ONLY Fringe show to do so that year. I think I'm gonna have to reserve a spot for HOUSEWIFE in 2022.... full review

(It's Been 76 Years And We're) Still Waiting for Lefty

There are people who revere the Group Theatre in the same way others revere the Beatles, Ernest Hemingway or Pablo Picasso. They have read every memoir, history, (auto)biography of Harold Clurman, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, Elia Kazan and Clifford Odets. They have read and/or seen performances of every play the Group mounted or even thought of producing. They have hunted down and watched every snippet of every studio system screen test of any actor who was a member of the Group, even if only... full review

Welcome to the Neighborhood

Kinda feeling a little out of it after 17 months of pandemic hibernation? Not sure that you'd know what to do or say at a backyard cookout these days? Well the good folks of WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD have got just the shindig for you! They've been stuck in bomb shelters because of a nuclear accident and they're ready to party like it's 1955! They're shakin' the cocktails, grillin' the burgers, baking' the beans and waitin' for the Rooskies, the CIA, the shell shock and the announcements fro... full review

Durang!

paul hoan zeidler · August 22, 2021 certified reviewer
One of the great joys of the Fringe are the shows you might never see during the regular theater season. Where most companies might mount a production of one of his full length plays, Mmmkay Productions and Crown City Theatre choose to shine a warm light on this collection of Christopher Durang's shorter works. A deep cast, crisply directed by Kristin Towers-Rowles, snaps Durang's anxious comic characters fully into their chaotic lives. Michael Mullen deftly centers the titular characters in "... full review

GATSBY an Immersive Illumination - Chapter 1: East Egg

paul hoan zeidler · August 22, 2021 certified reviewer
Enigmatic stories are difficult to dramatize, and enigmatic characters are even harder, but 2Cents Theatre Group accomplishes both with depth and style in this immersive production of the first chapter of F. Scott Fitzgerald's most famous novel. This inventive adaptation features a strong cast that includes Colin Willkie's ferocious Tom Buchanan and Ren Montoro's Jordan Baker, a beguiling young golfer who might be able to "balance a feather on the tip of her chin." Live accompaniment of Michael... full review

Come On Down

Jeff Scott Carey knows how to write comedic roles straight down the middle of the strike zones of his accomplished cast. And they deliver with home runs from the top to the bottom of the lineup. Lucas Alifano (looking great in earth tones) does wonderful work as a nice-guy supreme being condemned to live among his creations in an Alabama trailer park. Emily Clark whips up a southern girl, tired of working a drive-thru and her troglodyte ex, who's frustration has inspired her to get active for ... full review
