Some shows break the mold. They DISRUPT the medium. They take the expected roles or stories or themes or TROPES of theatre and spin them off the axis into unknown territory.
They DISCONNECT the audience from what they EXPECT and give them something:
DIFFERENT
WRONG
RIGHT
OUTRAGEOUS
KIND
WEIRD
DISJOINTED
BIZARRE
UNIQUE
and above all:
OUTSIDE THE LINES
Is your performance one of these? Then you might be this year’s winning TROPE BUSTER!
Qualifications
The show must be ALL of the following to be considered:
1. It must be an original production for Hollywood Fringe 2019. Remounts, Revivals or transplants are not eligible.
2. There must be a significant element of the production that breaks traditional theatrical or narrative or character conventions. Something unique and different must happen that forces the audience to re-examine the experience they are having. Immersive productions almost always fall within this category, but ANY production is potentially possible. If your audience walks out going, “What just HAPPENED?” in a good way, you’re probably good.
3. The production must be invested with passion. Only you can decide if that’s the case.
Those who wish to be considered must contact They Played Productions for consideration and arrange a performance for one of the TPP team to come and see the show. Last year we had more submissions than we could see effectively, so it is in your best interests to reach out as soon as possible for consideration.
The deadline for submitting is May 30th at 11:59 PM.

Methodology
The TPP team will see each production that submits itself within the appropriate time and arranges tickets for the reviewers.
Once all productions are seen, the TPP team will convene and discuss all productions, ranking them in the following categories:
- Production Quality
- Production Uniqueness
- Best Moments
The 5 productions that rank highest will become nominees and the highest overall will be this year’s winner.
Reward
Winners will receive a unique award created by producer and artist Thea Rivera specifically for this year’s TPP Trope Buster as well as a digital file listing your winning award.
