What I liked
Everything. I just loved it.
What I didn't like
I’d like to see more.
My overall impression
What a way to start the Fringe! This was the first of the shows I intend to see, and if this is any indication of what is in store, wow, what a year this is going to be. The PORTABLE DOROTHY PARKER was just so well written, performed, and directed that I don’t know where to begin. I went to the show because I’m a fan of Dorothy Parker, but I left being a fan of Annie Lux. So I guess the writing is where I’ll start.
The writing was both witty and acerbic. As Dorothy Parker reflects on the works she wishes to include/exclude in her “portable” to an editor, I also imagine Lux editing her own words. After all, Dorothy Parker is such an interesting person with her years of being part of the infamous Algonquin Round Table, writing award-winning scripts for Hollywood, and then ultimately being blacklisted believing she had communist ties, how do you know what to concentrate on when Dorothy goes on one of her drunken rants? With the precision of a skilled surgeon, Lux knew exactly where to cut and focus that, in the end, actually left me wanting to see more of Dorothy. I was engaged the entire time. Margot Avery’s performance was exquisite.
I thoroughly enjoyed the play, and I truly appreciate the talent behind The Portable DOROTHY PARKER.
Thank you.
