Maddox has a unique attention to nuance and an ability devise situations and characters previously never seen on stage. I was really warmed by the dynamics of the polycule parenting troupe, the choice to refer to the young trans character as The Kid to avoid deadnaming them, and the examination of a mentally messy character who truly wants to do their best. Shout out to Elisawon Etidorhpa for gracefully improvising through a wardrobe malfunction!
There’s also really cool collectible merch for sale after the show if you want to own a tarot-themed artistic rendition of one of the main characters!
What I didn't like
I loved Maddox’s play last year so much, I came into this showing wanting to compare them—don’t be a fool like me, Annex is a completely different animal!
My overall impression
After catching Maddox Pennington’s brilliant play “Love Chicken” last year, I knew I had to see what came next from this talented playwright. I attended the Tarot Afterparty showing and was rewarded with an evening of queer camaraderie, magical misadventures, and honest discussion of mental health.
