On a bare stage with minimal props, a strong cast, with some subtle but effective lighting, costume, and choreography, tells a powerful story about loss and grief. At first we see a woman wordlessly express mixed feelings about the space she has just entered. She is soon followed by a handful of other characters who are talking about her like a kind of Greek chorus, except that Greek choruses spoke with a unified voice, and these characters are arguing with each other. I saw this show last night, not knowing what to expect. This is a very dark, and very heavy piece. Imagine if the movie “Inside Out” took place after a funeral. There’s our main “Riley” character, a dancer, whose brother had recently committed a suicide that she blames herself for. The show is about her grief, and about coming to terms with it. Each character in the show is either a stage of grief (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression), or one of her inner emotions (Anxiety, Shame, Hope, Innocence), as they try to steer her through her grief, while battling the villain of the piece (noted in the program as “The Void”). In a word: Brilliant! My overall impression is this: This work of art is a necessary vehicle for opening up a dialogue for/with individuals who have not been able to identify and/or process their own grief. This play is also important for those who have been ignorant of what actually happens within a person's mind/body/soul as mourning takes hold. And last, this amazing play is important for people like me, who are well acquainted with the grieving process, to visualize/recognize each characteristic- and agree, as each "voice" was carefully and accurately personified.
