i loved that not only was the writing and performance superb, but the entire production was so intentional. this was clearly a well-directed and produced show. the lighting design, set design & props, uses of audio/video projection, and live drumming worked so seamlessly together to create an immersive experience and all served a distinct and clear purpose.
What I didn't like
absolutely nothing – the message was very clear to me, especially as a person inhabiting a marginalized identity. I think if you don’t “get it” then perhaps you just understand what it’s like to be misunderstood.
My overall impression
FUCKININCREDIBLE!
with this show, m. imani west embodied the landscape of their mind so vividly and so intimately that the performance has lingered on in my psyche for days now. their ability to switch between ‘characters’ so seamlessly, to feel and express such vulnerability on a stage (not to mention their incredible singing voice) — ranks them amongst the greatest actors of our generation. so much so that you wonder, is this even acting? or am i seeing you?
