Even if you have no experience with Jem, the cartoon, you can instantly recognize the style and tropes of the genre. Loved the record execs, the lack of a real villain, the oblivious pluckiness of the star, the clueless boyfriend, the whole supporting cast. Just so much fun to watch.
What I didn't like
I watched a livestream of the show, since I couldn’t make it to the theater, so I wish I’d had the chance to see it in person. I imagine it had be so much more of a spectacle live.
My overall impression
This musical was fantastic, and I don’t know anything about Jem and the Holograms. The songs were catchy, hilarious, and pitch perfect for the theme. The cast featured some incredible voices and surgical comedic timing. The story is so hyper-typical of the genre that it pushes the comedy through the roof.
