What I liked

I loved the minimalist production, which allowed us to focus very intently on the emotional journeys of all the characters. I felt deeply linked to Jacinto and Marshall’s stories, and to the relationships between the bunkmates. I also really liked that the story, while fresh and unique in its own right, was reminiscent of other accounts of white supremacy and labor exploitation. It was very much its own piece of art that is now also a part of a canon of important works that demonstrate how inextricably linked all persecuted minorities are to one another. Details of our stories and experiences may differ, but we have so much more in common than those in power would have us believe. Any piece of art that serves as a reminder of that fact is powerful, necessary, and one that I feel profound gratitude for.

What I didn't like

I can’t think of anything that stuck out to me as genuinely needing improvement. If something does need improving, the people involved with the show know better than I – someone who’s only seen one performance – do.

My overall impression

Monkeys is a fantastic production. It runs the gamut from charming to hilarious at times, to genuinely heartbreaking. You truly feel for each of the characters, and are deeply, emotionally invested in them. The writing and performances are powerful and optimistic. You will laugh – often – you will tear up, you might learn something, and you will certainly enjoy yourself.
