There was incredible talent behind the work – Lauren’s training as an opera singer is worthy of a show all on it’s own. She’s incredibly funny, and the jokes flew breezily even as she bounced between them and kind-hearted wisdom. And the gut-wrenching sections were felt right to the core!
What I didn't like
Trying to play two characters in a single conversation, especially if they’re arguing with each other or moving through the space individually, is inherently difficult to make clear. I think I would have understood the scenes more if the conversations had been consolidated into the perspective of Begum Akhtar, rather than watching Akhtar become other people and back into herself as they volley.
On a similar note, I would have liked to know what motivated Akhtar to choose to use a remote control to transition through her story.
My overall impression
An emotionally biographic journey through the art of being self-satisfied. Lauren displays an apt honesty and charm throughout the entire piece, and strikes several poignant moments with a quiet but powerful grace. And the food was delicious!
