What I liked
Brigitte has an engaging stage presence and weaves her story as she prepares her favorite Korean meal, Pho, and how the recipe is wildly different if you’re from North Korea vs South Korea. She spent her entire life believing she was a certain kind of Asian, only to have the rug pulled out from under her thanks to a Christmas gift…a gift that sends her spiraling into an identity crisis that’s alarming and funny. But in the end it all comes back to the ingredients. Pho is still Pho, and you are still you. Well done.
What I didn't like
It’d be a great souvenir to have cards with Brigitte’s family Pho recipe on it for the audience to take home, so they can try it themselves.
My overall impression
Rice Rice Baby is an enlightening multicultural journey that challenges us to not judge a book by its cover, as the saying goes. Brigitte traces her life — and the intriguing investigation into who she really is — through the food that brings her family together, even if the ingredients on the table sometimes create conflict. You may think you know where you come from — but this show will make you question who you think you are.
