The piece is depicting “the inner battle” that occurs within each one of us. We sometimes need to break through several barriers in order to realize our inner strength and beauty and potential. The stronger we become the stronger our community is and more beautiful the world around us becomes.
We will follow this inner battle throughout the piece where the movement vocabulary, its physicality and the relationship to the music will play a significant role. The movement will clearly expresses the fear and restrictions of daily life, literary by attempts to break through the spatial barriers, which are a representation of barriers we feel internally.
The work is inspired by the current political situation in the world: the Arab Spring. I am particularly touched by the act of the young Tunisian man Mohamed Bouazizi, a street vendor who set himself on fire on 17 December 2010. He did this in protest of the confiscation of his wares and the harassment and humiliation, he reported, was inflicted on him by municipal officials. This event triggered an intensive campaign of civil resistance in Tunisia, including a series of street demonstrations.
I am inspired by the ripple effect this event triggered. I will turn to the events as inspiration for the movement vocabulary and its potential for powerful imagery. This piece is not a recapture of what happened to Bouazizi, nor does it morally question it. I am using the events in Tunisia as inspiration for own analytical process in terms of constrictions and barriers and relation to community, government I feel as human in my own life and as catalyst for emotions I am trying to express. The revolution in Tunisia demonstrates that we all have a stake in creating a healthy, prosperous community. It is a true testimony to the power and beauty that can occur when people and communities come together to fight for a greater cause. This is what I am inspired by and looking to translate in to my work: power and the importance of the individual strength within the community.
In the terms of music I am together with the composer Paul Matthis, paulmatthis.com,creating an original piece of music. The music will have a direct relationship to the emotional life of the work. One layer is the rhythm, which is one of the essential properties of this work and is inspired by a famous folk dance from former Yugoslavia: "Glamocko Nemo”. In this work it is representing the essence and strength. The second is the ambiguous sounds that represent the unknown and fear. The movement vocabulary is not dependent of the music and is not necessarily to the rhythm. The two are separate entities, layers that coexist and sometimes meet.
