I loved the interaction Meg had with the audience and how it informed how certain sections of the show were performed. To elaborate – the audience was able to add fuel with laughter, applause, and even sighs or gasps pending what was being covered. And you could see the joy (or pain) in Meg’s face. This kind of connection is truly special and this piece is one that I would happily recommend!
What I didn't like
The director in me was aching a bit for visuals (maybe some of the people she was talking about like her parents, the German exchange family, maybe even the church bully).
My overall impression
Deeply personal, yet universally relatable are terms that probably just scratch the service of Meg Lin’s triumphant solo show! In addition to massive amounts of heart and humor overflowing in the piece, there are also themes of family dynamics, never feeling as though you belong, and the havoc mental health can inflict that are explored. While I am not Chinese, I can certainly appreciate the messaging that maybe all of us are like “chopped suey” when it comes down to what and more importantly, who we are… this was truly a beautiful piece of theatre!!!
