What I liked

Bisschop is absolutely brilliant with his portrayal, in mannerism, accent, and attitude. He covers so much ground with this show and brings to life a persona with the kind of grit and determination Royko deserves. No punches are pulled in his examination of Royko’s life and work. His pre-recorded bits all work, and his interaction between them and Studs is natural and real.

My overall impression

I had heard the name Mike Royko, and I’d probably read a few of his columns reprinted in the Des Moines Register back in the 90s, but I couldn’t even imagine the impact a columnist can have on a city until Mitchell Bisschop brought him to life. Extremely well researched, brilliantly portrayed, fantastic sourced footage transitions, this show is engaging, funny, honest, and informative. Bisschop’s shifts from narrator Studs Terkel to Royko are smooth and hilarious. I learned more than I would have thought about a person that is synonymous with the city of Chicago and more about the city itself through him. Definitely see this show!
