Stories were interwoven to perfection, the play switches between the four women very seamlessly. From laughing at our own teenage insecurities to nearly tearing up at the thought of being sexually assaulted, Yoni Ki Kahaniya had us completely immersed. They had a unique blend of references to both Hollywood and Bollywood, and audience couldn’t get enough of it!
A special performance that was worth mentioning was Chhaya Néné’s ‘unclear’ part of the play. It takes an immense amount of courage to confront your own past when a harassment-related incident is involved. Chhaya took it a step further – not only did embrace it with honesty, but her re-enactment of the story felt like we were experiencing this gut-wrenching story firsthand. The tears, the anxiety, the regret and the shame – we felt it all. This was in contrast with her other stories from earlier in her childhood, which were filled with laughter, joy and innocence. It’s clear that she’s a very versatile actor, can’t wait to see what she does next!
What I didn't like
Hard to find fault in a play of this caliber, I could only hope there’s a sequel of sorts that I could watch next year!
My overall impression
The play was really well-structured. We eased into the play with light-hearted humor before diving into very real, deep-rooted issues as the play progressed. Every story in the play was filled with unique experiences and vibrant characters. They drew me in very naturally and had me drawing parallels to my own life as a South Asian kid. That being said, I think this play is for people of all backgrounds – it’s a treat to watch Chhaya, Tanya, Sharmita and Sapna come together and have sharing their personal stories in such a vulnerable yet entertaining manner. Well done y’all!
