Everything really worked for me: the costume and prop choices, the media, the recorded voices. I loved that she brought her dog! The song choices were great too. Oh! and the interactions with the audience are fabulous. Giving out the autographs. All these little details create the world of Teruko.
What I didn't like
In the moment, I’d say the only thing that caught me off-guard was when Teruko brings up her struggle with anorexia and bulimia. It’s said in past tense, meaning she had been struggling with it, but as the audience we don’t find this out til much later, so I was a bit taken aback and wondered if it would be better mentioned earlier. But…her story is so dense, that I’m not sure it would have worked to tell the audience earlier. It’s a one hour show and sometimes you have to just give the audience a lot of information all at once.
My overall impression
An absolutely PHENOMENAL performance! I could not take my eyes off Teruko. She was truly born to be on stage. She tells her story so genuinely and with delightful humor. I feel privileged to have been able to see it.
