About the Project

After 30+ years as a SVP in Luxury Travel, I retired to devote my time to a one-man play ‘What Could Go Wrong?’ Changing careers at 71 years of age is not for sissies. I have kept over 80 diaries over my life’s course and cull the material for my play from segments of them. I am a diarist, actor and writer. My full bio is reflected in my website (link below) as is my play, which I prefer to call ‘an evening with’ as it is not a play in the normal sense but a series of monologues/dialogues written from the notes in my diaries.
‘What Could Go Wrong?’ : This web of stories is culled from real life – a very unusual life- and the diaries he kept for 40+ years and paint a picture of worldly places and events. In the tradition of cringe memoirists like David Sedaris, Augusten Burroughs and Quentin Crisp, Vass delivers a series of scenes that can shock, may embarrass, but hopefully always entertain. The language is as it was in the mid to late 20th century, when growing up ‘white trash poor’ reflected some very harsh verbiage. Those of you who have seen John Waters movies know this verbal cultural reflection, and especially so given Waters and Vass grew up in the same city, Baltimore, at the same time. Indeed the material is ‘blue and vulgar’.
During the show business incarnation of his career, Vass worked with, for and around: 12 Academy Award winners, 17 Emmy winners, 9 Tony winners, 44 Grammy winners and 11 Obie winners as well as the ‘usual suspects’ in the nightclub and cabaret arenas. The stories! They’re told! The lawyer fees to ensure they CAN be told! Aside from what I think are meaningful, moving and entertaining stories, an important takeaway from your time with me is honesty. Can you be as honest in your life as I being in mine, as I get comfortable in my third chapter of life.
My performance contains adult material (18 and older) and language that is offensive to some and reflects controversial situations. The evening is based on over 80 diaries I have kept for 50+ years. It is NOT pornographic. It is verbally graphic. If you click on the email link that takes you to my site, you agree you are at least 18 years old and understand it contains adult content. www.whatcouldgowrong-theplay.com
