In Character began life as a 5 character comedic monologue show way back at the EdinburghFestival in 2002. But it wasn’t until 2016 when Steve properly began to rewrite and create newer characters that it really started to gather momentum. It was at times grotesque, pathos-laden, farcical, touching and acutely observed.
The first quintet of characters included a fast talking ‘urban’ Mayor of Kentish Town, effete but violent ex criminal Queenie, ex stunt-man Dave Pike, carousel huckster Ernie Vas and celebrity stalker Lyn. The show headlined the one person theatre festival at the Seven Dials Playhouse in the West End of London and was part of the Udderbelly line-up for their South Bank Festival. This year five new characters have been added including a former Royal butler, a sadistic teacher, a style guru, a modern Druid troubleshooter and a Northern Soul music fanatic. Steve does not leave the stage during the show with all character transformations happening in full view of the audience. All music in the show has been written and produced by Steve.
The American version of the show will feature 6 characters from his stable of 12 including a former Royal butler, a born again Christian swinger, and a sadistic teacher.
Steve has a very impressive CV of comedy and acting work that includes over 650 performances as Mr Wormwood in the West End in 2012, Made In Dagenham and Mr Gum at the National Theatre. TV includes 3 series of Little Britain, Manhunt, Holby City, Friday Night Dinner. He is also the creator of cabaret legend Lenny Beige and so much more.
