I liked the sharp quick pacing, moving quickly from one scenario to another. I liked the variety and juxtaposition of emotions provoked, from silly to outrageous to devastated and right back to chuckles, all portrayed expertly.
I liked how accessible and likable the actress is. She seems to be connecting with every audience member, directly. She seems so real, even while portraying events from 20 years ago, as if it is happening in real time on the stage in front of us.
I especially liked the lyrics of the first song, about the University boyfriend who has lunch dates with his exes. It’s like the author KNOWS me and my life!!
What I didn't like
The ONLY thing I didn’t like was that it ended!! I wanted it to go on and on. I want to know what happened next. The end of the play totally caught me by surprise — I was sure she was coming back to the stage to continue.
Can’t wait for the sequel!!!!
My overall impression
I loved this one-woman show! It was funny and clever, and because it is based on the actress’ real life, incredibly moving. The actress is supremely talented, able to portray herself distinctly, at various stages in her life. Several layers of her developing personality and womanhood are deftly differentiated with sublime subtlety. Changing out of pig tails is just icing on the cake. :-)
“Talented” changes to “multi-talented” when she breaks into song, which occurs a few times in this production. Her lovely singing voice accents the profound and relatable lyrics, which often hit close to home.
The 45-minute program is a mini tour-de-force that truly showcases a genuinely engaging performer.
