What I liked

I liked Kirchenbaum’s singing, dancing and acting. I also liked the lighting, costuming and set design which were all amazing given the small venue and budget.

I liked most of Kirchenbaum’s songs which displayed a strong grasp of current pop styles and instrumentation and I liked the arc of the show which started with a fast paced series of numbers performed as the Angeline-like phony pop-star character and morphed into the second section of the show which revealed Kirchenbaum’s true self and her inner conflicts.

What I didn't like

Several of the songs were not strong enough to be included in the act. If the two weaker songs were cut or stronger material was substituted, the show could better maintain energy and interest. Also, Kirschenbaum’s bass playing is not always strong enough to contribute to the otherwise strong instrumental backing. It would be better to use an additional side man on bass which would free Kirchenbaum to work up front without the bass as a prop. Additional band members or back-up singers would also strengthen the musical dynamic of the act.

My overall impression

The show is an energetic, well choreographed cabaret act with strong original songs and tight instrumental backing. Kirschenbaum displays an amazing combination of acting, singing and movement skills as she morphs from a phony “Angeline” like character who craves nothing but fame and attention into her more vulnerable self. After a fast paced series of songs, she transitions into a searing exploration of her own sexuality and gender identity as she attempts to discover where she fits and how to navigate relationships as a young twenty-something. The show’s production values seen via live stream video were quite stunning considering the low budget and improvised venue. Lighting, sound and beautifully quirky set and costuming came together to maintain visual interest throughout the show. One can’t help but imagine what Kirchenbaum’s act might look like with back-up singers and a full band given her obvious star quality and charisma.

If one looks at this effort as a precursor to something bigger, several of the songs could be cut or stronger material could be put in as Kirchenbaum’s song writing continues to improve and grow. Although her bass playing is fun to watch, it might be better to use an additional stronger side man on bass which would give us more of Kirchenbaum up front doing what she does best. At this point however there’s enough musical and dramatic impact in the show to make it well worth it’s short 40 minute run time. Major labels and entertainment companies should definitely keep their eyes on what’s going on here as the feeling that something unique and wonderful is being born is impossible to ignore.
