What I liked
A musical is always fun. A super hero story is always fun. A parody is always fun. So, great combo! The Black Canary is an OUTSTANDING singer (and very cute, too!) Best songstress in a blonde wig since Aida! Lyrics are clever and goofy, and the cast’s singing is very good. Special kudos to the Music Meister—great voice! Some of the lines are delightfully terrible. e.g. “You suck, Bat Man. Your parents died because you suck.” Yikes! So dark. Love it.
I also liked how utterly ridiculous Aquaman’s costume was. I didn’t know who the heck he was until he was introduced, and actually wondered if, somehow, Shaggy had too many Scooby Snacks and stumbled onto the wrong stage in his psychedelic fog.
What I didn't like
More women—as many as men, please.
More dance—I always like more dance. I get it—it’s not a Chorus Line. I still think it could use more, and still keep the moves simple and goofy. I’d go even bigger with the goofiness of the dancing.
Would be cool to add more of those “masking tape” (?) lines that create the building and doors on the black backdrop, and create an outline of a skyline. Those signature cartoon onomatopoeia signs would make a great, but still simple, addition to the backdrop. (e.g. BAM! POW! KABLAM!) These are just extra touches for next time, not anything that makes or breaks the show, of course.
Not to get all Feminazi, but I don’t know why Batman gets credited with saving the day when it was Black Canary. Obvs.
My overall impression
GOOFY, CLEVER FUN with great singing!
