I loved how through her wise and hilarious words she encourages us to see and connect with each other and find love and humor by paying attention and truly seeing one another. It’s moving and funny and real, and as Rebecca herself says, “It’s hardly even about cancer.” It’s really about what it means to be alive.
What I didn't like
It all worked so beautifully! She took the stories and shaped them into magnificent storytelling under the incredible direction of Cameron Watson. I could have watched even more crazy bus tales. This is the kind of show that can go to so many places and needs to be seen because people will fall in love with this show. Rebecca O’Brien could mount her one-woman show in hospitals, schools, community centers, or even bigger theatre venues. It’s such a gem of a piece where she invites us all along for the ride.
My overall impression
“Getting There” by Rebecca O’Brien is one of the brightest and most beautiful theatrical experiences I’ve ever enjoyed. Imagine going through chemo and having to take the city bus to treatment. Instead of bemoaning her fate, Rebecca O’Brien embraces it and befriends passengers on the bus and makes them family. She also does it with her little service dog, Stella, whose sweetness brings even the most cranky of bus riders together.
