What I liked

Deft balance between historical exposition, character relationships, acknowledgement of theatrical devices (kabuki-like performers manipulating gigantic temple doors and a fantastic goddess puppet,) and acknowledgement of a modern audience. Clever handling of characters who speak different languages. Soundscapes and music, including live instruments and singing, and driving percussion performed by Chloe Madrigal.

What I didn't like

At 90 minutes it’s somewhat long for a Fringe show, but actually left me wanting to know a lot more about the story and historical figures. I guess that’s a good thing.

My overall impression

Come for the sword fighting, stay for the drama. In the title role, award-winning fight choreographer Jen Albert leads a versatile and nimble cast through battles within her family, within their tribe, and against Roman legions in first-century AD Britain. The tight script by Christopher William Johnson, who also directed, rockets through the 90 minute story without pausing for breath. The stakes are made clear early on, deals are cut with Gods and men, and then on to battle!
