The Bathhouse at Midnight is an installation that visually resembles a traditional Russian banya. The banya historically was a site with a multiplicity of roles: it was a place to clean oneself, in villages it was a space for women to give birth, late at night it became a stage for magical rituals and encounters with the spirit world, and, like bathhouses in other cultures, it was a space for intergenerational learning, touch and healing. In The Bathhouse at Midnight, the Banya becomes a container that references this history while simultaneously creating space for moments of intimacy between the artist and participants that echoes and extends this history.
