What I liked

What I liked about This Was Never… is how engaging the show is, all the way through. Bowling introduces the audience to her authentic self, and at least 3 other characters that help tell the story of her path and the path of her beloved comedy partner Britt. And I like how Bowling leads the audience through this story that is full of laughs and wrought with difficult themes and yes, even some dreaded improv that we were warned was coming. The phenomenal writing never lets up and keeps the audience’s eyes glued to Bowling and the stage. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this talented actress showcase her talent in this show and give us a genuinely human story to watch, laugh at, and cry with, all in the span of 90 of the fastest minutes ever.

What I didn't like

One note I have about the show is that there was what sounded like AM radio coming through a little over the house speakers. Bowling did her best to address it comedically and push through delivering her stellar performance, but it was noticeable. Oddly enough, it made me focus harder on Bowling her and words. So my only constructive note is for the tech and the house manager to check the house speakers before the next shows.

My overall impression

Riveting, stirring, and riotous, Samantha Bowling is a marvel! This Was Never Supposed To Be A One Woman Show: A One Woman show is directed with vulnerable self-assuredness, Samantha produces this thing soup to nuts with adroit skill, and she is operating at an amazing level of talent. Bowling is so engaging, with her literally-layered costume designs and her memorable songs delivered by her dreamy ethereal singing, that it’s impossible to look away from her as she delivers this can’t-miss show. The storytelling, the performance, the technical production, the direction, and the cohesion of this show make this show THE show to see at the 2023 Los Angeles Fringe Festival.
