What I liked

I like that this piece is so ambitious. On the physical level we see a performance that is fluid in movement and music and is engaging the audience with some elements of interactive moments. On the literary front, WOW, I was so “moved” by this artist’s concepts and profound thoughts on what makes us who we are , and what shapes us during our time here on earth. Provocative. So many tie-ins and payoffs in this style of storytelling, and I would be amiss if I didn’t mention the wonderful HUMOR that is infused throughout. The ability to laugh as we learn about Samantha’s heartbreaking journey gently ushers us into some really gratifying moments where we witness her discovering the full spectrum of colors that make her journey worth it.

What I didn't like

What I absolutely LOVE about this piece is that it is ambitious. It is cleverly written and there are many moments that are SO RICH that I want the time to breathe and marvel through that specific revelation, you know what I mean? The show clips along, it really moves with a speed that is absolutely paramount for this style of storytelling, however, there are some moments that are absolutely “earned” and, in my opinion, ought to be savored and enjoyed like the first bite of an incredibly tasting meal. I would suggest that Ms. Bowling choose the specific moments that deserve a breath or three. The audience hearts are beating with her, and I think she’ll discover when we all want to live longer in those specific moments. Three thumbs up, just because it sounds better than two! Bravo!

My overall impression

Stunning. The space was perfect for a show like this. Intimate, exposing, dangerous. I absolutely loved it. This is an ambitious project written and performed by an artist who truly has something to say… and sing. Yup, as soon as I sat in the audience I spotted an amp and instruments on one side of the stage and a fallen microphone stand and a lonely pair of shoes on the other side, I wondered how this was all going to play out. Samantha weaves in and out of archetypal characters all in hot pursuit of her and of their own worldly connection, if that makes any sense? The show is a constant deep dive into humanity (and you’ll understand the pun once you see this performance). If you enjoy theater that is challenging and uncomfortable and comforting, all at once, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this poetic and existential piece that moves with grace and utter vulnerability.
