Last summer, long-time friends and creative partners Elizabeth Schuetzle and Abigail Swoap were sipping wine and joking about how hard it is to flirt with women who have no way to tell that they’re queer. Elizabeth and Abigail identify as femme—a term generally understood as shorthand for queer people who present a more traditionally feminine aesthetic. As tends to happen after a few glasses of wine, the joke soon spiraled into a more impassioned conversation. They realized that there’s a lot to unpack about the relationship between aesthetic and identity, and there’s even more to unpack about the relationship between identity and community.
This realization got them thinking—do other femme-identifying people experience similar feelings of invisibility in the queer community? What is the difference between presenting in a feminine manner and identifying as a femme individual? They decided to investigate these questions by interviewing other femme-identifying people and arranging the transcripts into this documentary-style play.
