What I liked

The writing and acting were very good, characters well drawn out, clever transitions, evocative music, fun set design

What I didn't like

In a couple of places, Covode could slow down the delivery of her lines. A few get lost in the audience’s laughter at what came before. In my mind, a minor technical issue which I attribute to youthful enthusiasm!

My overall impression

What a great evening at the theatre! Christine Covode’s coming-of-age play takes us along on a terrific ride. Covode’s work focuses on the arc of her life (thus far) and her relationship with her mom at various stops along the way. We first meet the playwright as a young pup, comfortably cocooned within the friendly confines of her home. That all changes as she wades into the murkier waters of middle and high school and concludes with the hard-earned lessons she has learned through college.

Covode’s writing is crisp and hits the mark. She provides insights into her life that we can all relate to and brings into focus many of the traits that make us human – the good ones (love, laughter, hope, friendship) and the not-so-good ones (anger, vanity, jealousy). I laughed and cried (and cringed too!) and walked out of the theatre impressed with this woman’s smart, independent voice. I like what Covode has to say and look forward to what she does next.
