What I liked
Sophia Del Pizzo is engaging and charming and brings across a very serious message in a masterfully light way. I could relate to so much of what she was saying, especially her personal take on where anxiety comes from. For some reason we are taught to fear from a very young age. The science of anxiety was fascinating too. She pulls off audience participation in the best way, and Jimmi Simpson’s turn as Johnny Assmonkey was hilarious. I loved the idea of personifying anxiety, giving it a name. Sophia had us all write down the names of each of our own anxieties as we came into the theatre, which set the night up for something unexpected, and then evolved into a very playful, honest, raw, and satisfying experience. I left the theatre feeling pretty great, so I’d say Sophia’s message and Jimmi Simpson’s direction came off just right.
What I didn't like
I thought maybe the names of the audiences anxieties would lead to something else later, but it turned out it was just our introduction to the subject matter. Still effective and creative tho. I loved how personal she made everything and her honest relationship with the audience. Everything felt completely authentic.
My overall impression
Very fun and informative show with an important message. Sophia Del Pizzo brilliantly takes the audience along on a journey through her struggles with anxiety, and teaches us quite a bit about the subject in the process, which I realized, I should actually know a lot more about!
