What I liked

Zach’s shows use every moment of stage time with great efficiency— there’s no dragging exposition, and no denouement at the end. It’s a musical rollercoaster that blasts off immediately and doesn’t slow down until you’re spit back out the door in an incredibly enjoyable 60 minutes.

What I didn't like

Since this is broad musical comedy, I expect villains will be villains without too much dimension, but I felt like maybe I wanted the sister to be either cartoonishly evil to justify her egregious gold digger or solidly more complex. Given the time limits, I’d say more evil. It was in the middle which made it feel weird for this style of show. Could be fun to have her be more gleeful with it all— she was somewhat, but I’m talking Little Mermaid Ursula gleeful. But that’s just a preference and didn’t spoil anything for me.

My overall impression

Another winner from Zach Bernstein. Loved the songs and the characters were incredibly endearing. Brilliant cast and snappy direction, with not a minute wasted, holding a sweet moral of the story about not letting your worst moment define you.
