Heather’s presentation of pain is hilarious. This is my favorite thing in the world. Starting with stand-up was a brilliant choice, and what follows is similar to the explication of jokes that was a big theme in Seinfeld—except instead of nihilism and selfishness, we get the backstory to Heather’s act in a way that elevates the jokes with meaning.
What I didn't like
I don’t think she needed many of the sound effects for atmosphere. I felt the text, staging, and performance were so strong that they stand on their own. The sound effects didn’t detract at all, I just didn’t think they were as powerful as the unity of the other elements.
Also, it could be twice as long. Wanted more of both of them.
My overall impression
I loved this show a lot. It seems like Heather’s aim isn’t to indict or to cast blame, but rather to dive into the heartbreaking chasms of understanding that can’t ever be bridged—even between a father and a daughter. It takes a brave person to embody her parent, but, as Heather does so with such eerie precision, she reveals that our parents live within us whether we like it or not.
