What I liked

Strong actor choices bring life to the eccentric personalities who represent human foibles. I especially liked Transe Carter as the bossy autocrat who tried to command everyone and everything in his path.

The show has a memorable audio visual signature, from its ambient electronic soundtrack to the flowing choreography that the titular Prince uses to travel from world to world. Many of the interactions are in silhouette, which provides a striking visual and encourages the audience to imagine the details rather than have them spoon-fed. The experience almost feels akin to a radio drama.

The good intentions in the piece’s message are persistent throughout, even though they are sometimes very abstract. (I still am not entirely sure what the rose is meant to represent.) The lessons about self-determination and self-care are appropriate for any age.

What I didn't like

I liked the silhouette technique so much that I wanted it to be used more often!

One beef I have with the source text is the frequent impugning of adults as a group. I wish the material could find another way to represent the loss of imagination.

My overall impression

A dreamy, mesmerizing take on the classic children’s novella.
