About the Project

In the class, students will work on combining different found
materials and creating collaged “PRECIOUS OBJECTS”. These special,
unique, “PRECIOUS OBJECTS” will encourage students to look at everyday
items in a different manner to enhance their creativity. Basic art
theories about color and composition and balance will be taught.

As Hollywood’s most famous shoe designer, Salvatore Ferragamo created
some of the most legendary shoes ever featured in film. He made
sandals for the Cecil B. DeMille epic The Ten Commandments. Dorothy’s
ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz were made by none other than
Ferragamo. Marilyn Monroe’s sexy stilettos in The Seven Year Itch –
Ferragamo again. Other film credits include Some Like It Hot, Mildred
Pierce, and The Postman Always Rings Twice.

Ferragamo was not only ahead of his time when it came to design and
fit – but also in his choice of materials. When WWII made supple
leathers and exotic skins impossible to find in the late 1930’s and
early 1940’s, Ferragamo found ingenious ways to incorporate Florentine
lace, paper, tree bark, cellophane, raffia, hemp, and fish skin into
his collection. Elevating these elements and keeping the integrity
of his luxury design. This is why the designer was so at home to
design exotic skins and precious materials later in his career and this is why the collection remains relevant to this day.

Taught by Hollywood Arts instructor and fashion designer Erika Mark.
