Expert use of comedy as a gateway to empathy and connection. The subject matter is quite specific, but the pain is universal (as are the soundtracks of Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid). Glennis’ physical work is also great, especially as she shifts from one character to another with a swift and simple change in placement of her hoodie and tenor of her voice.
What I didn't like
Please only play “Gloria” by Laura Branigan on a loop as the audience enters the theater. Is that helpful feedback?
My overall impression
Cavegirl was profoundly moving. Glennis masterfully drew laughs at exactly the right moments, breaking tension and offering some catharsis intermittently as she pulled us down into the depths with her, each time a little deeper into Gloria’s shame and anger and sadness. It made me openly cry on the sidewalk, so, A+.
