I loved how it was staged in different areas and how simply Heather changed from character to character to not only give a sense of time and place, but different energies depending on who was talking. Brilliant. I also really, really appreciated how every character was multi-dimensional and had a very legit POV.
What I didn't like
Super technical note: some of the lighting changed color, which changed the mood, which was awesome. I would have liked to see more color changes, but I also understand that might be what they had at the time. No wonder this was an Encore award winner!
My overall impression
Fertile is a wonderfully written play exploring all the emotional nuances of what it takes to bring a child into this techno-godlike world. Heather Dowling is magnificent in telling her candid, compassionate and surprisingly complex story. Seeing multiple characters’ points of view, I almost forgot I was watching a one-woman show!
