My overall impression

A simple stage with a bed, a table, and a podium. That’s all Heather Dowling has at her disposal besides her skills as a performer and a storyteller for her hour-long one-person show, Fertile. She embodies more than a dozen characters throughout the performance and transitions between them with great ease and control, keeping each voice distinct and relatable. From the eager and overwhelmed heroine Jenny to her wise and soft-spoken neighbor Gloria, the over-the-top and borderline delirious acupuncturist, the blunt but sensitive husband Matt and much more, Fertile is not only a testament to Dowling’s acting chops, it also reflects her deep understanding of the human condition as a writer, making the audience laugh or ponder by how each character responds to ideas of fertility, motherhood, life, or something as simple as a mental picture of turkey baster (method). A thought-provoking show filled with laughter and sprinkled with heartfelt moments.
