Strongest among the show’s assets are Dowling’s facility for distinct and memorable characters, the warm and inviting tone, as well as the lack of judgment and ability to examine her subject matter from a variety of perspectives. And her humor. She takes the inherently not-funny and finds laughs and humanity inside it.
What I didn't like
I wouldn’t call it a criticism, but I probably could have watched another half hour of this show. Dowling creates a world that I wasn’t quite ready to leave by the end.
My overall impression
A witty, sincere and unflinching look at a painful subject we all have dealt with – in one way or another – but seldom talk about. Writer / performer Heather Dowling bravely mines material from her own experience and creates an intimate, funny, fly-on-the-wall experience like no other. Never dipping into sentimentality or self pity, even when she would have every right to. Highly recommended.
