What I liked

The staging was very well done considering the space allotment. The moments of highlighting humor distracting us from the seriousness of an untrained fighter entering a boxing ring. I liked that they didn’t Million Dollar Baby us all.

What I didn't like

The costuming – I would suggest a wardrobe change for the final fight.

My overall impression

Fight or Flight was a great journey through the relationship between yourself and your own will to power through the agonizing struggles of existence. At what point do you reach your peak existence? What are the powers that compel you to keep moving forward and striving for excellence? How do you keep that drive alive? The playwright examined these ideas in a fun and thought provoking way utilizing sport to tell her story. The character of Jones and Easton display both sides of the spectrum of the believer and the one needing something to believe in. The two actors earn the audience attention from their first moments on stage with a jump rope as they proceed to jump through the hoops of human connection to begin to understand their personal journey and one another. The other characters add a great charm and humor to an otherwise violent, sexist, and aggressive world of boxing. I’ve never felt such a need to possess a gatorade bottle to dispel irritating conversations – but now I 100% need one. 10/10 never been better.
