It’s hard to say whether the writing or the performances had a bigger impact — in fact, when you’re watching as gifted a writer/director/actor as Jessica Moreno perform at the top of her game, it becomes impossible to separate the two. The wonderfully-articulated comedy and pathos are fully baked into the script, and it’s hard to imagine this play not succeeding whoever Carol and Andrew were portrayed by… but the next-level performances by Moreno and Nicky Romaniello elevate the experience tremendously.
What I didn't like
Give us more! This piece earns its big emotional moments, and the impact of those are substantial enough to allow for plenty of room for more meat to be put on these bones. I could’ve happily watched these characters interact for 75 or 90 minutes instead of 60.
My overall impression
A moving and hilarious one-act that delivers big laughs, creates genuine emotional impact, and leaves its audience wanting another hour with our characters. One of my favorite shows of Fringe 2019.
