What I liked

The masks and the movement were incredible. All of the actors were great, especially Laurent Sayer and Maria Camacho. The message of questioning, the way the world was set up, the way that it revealed the different constructs in our world and the arbitrary rules they rest upon, all great work.

What I didn't like

I wasn’t satisfied by the end. Yes, we should break the rules when they don’t work, and yes, we should revolt, but what then? To what end? What are the methods through which revolution actually works, not just starts? The show creates a good case for breaking the chains, but says nothing for what to do with broken links.

My overall impression

Provocative, stirring, and not here to play nice, Start Swimming looks into the audiences faces and asks them the most uncomfortable of questions: What are you doing here? Prepare to question your way of life, your decisions, the institutions that ground you and the very idea of “you” in this world of fake rules and made up boundaries.
