This show is a loving satire of white american mediocrity, as well as the expectations american society places on immigrants to conform and excel. With a runtime of only thirty brisk minutes, this a bold topic to take on, but the piece is successful in reminding us that struggles with parents and – perhaps eventually – parenting, is universal. Through humor, we hold a mirror to our shared culture, and the frustration that comes with trying to follow your heart in a world full of judgement.
What I didn't like
The best way to improve this show is to give Joy Regullano a full series somewhere, so her parents can be proud of her talent and possibly also mortified at inspiring such an entertaining but also heartwarming piece.
My overall impression
Parents just don’t understand. Strive for excellence! Do your homework! Don’t let your GPA dip! Practice your music! Get a good job! It can be exhausting for anyone, but for those who grew up as a child of immigrants, it can feel like you’re working harder than anyone else around you. Wouldn’t it be nice to just, y’know, take it easy?
