What I liked
Though I thoroughly enjoyed the bombastic songs and the perfectly delivered humor, I think I appreciated even more the subtle thoughtfulness of the play’s ultimate message: most parents are trying to do the best they can; it’s okay to be frustrated and to feel disappointed while loving and treasuring your family at the same time. I also feel genuine sadness (but also understanding) that Joy pleads with the audience that her parents never find out about the play; I’d love to see a sequel addressing the process by which Joy reveals “Supportive White Parents” to her real parents!
What I didn't like
There’s very little I would want changed other than that it was occasionally difficult to hear some of the lyrics because the audience was laughing so loudly (a good problem to have!); it might be nice to have a little amplification if this were to be done in a context with more setup time
My overall impression
Joy and her cast use every second of this well-designed play to its fullest, bringing levity to an issue that is fraught with pain, irony, and, of course, familial love.
