Both late for very different reasons and rushing to the departure gate, the last two passengers, Adam (a bright and individualistic 22 year-old filmmaker), and Julia (a 50 year-old, once vivacious and confident hotel operator), are thrown together on a internal flight to a tiny parochial Island. The 45 minute flight plays out as one unbroken scene which will affect each of them inexorably. Sitting together, there’s an instant and intense spark. Their conversation ebbs and flows, never dull, always challenging, laughing, learning and listening. They share and bond with gut wrenching honesty, tears and hilarity. Inspired by Adam’s naive optimism as he reveals his fears and dreams, shortcomings and qualities, Julia opens up about the despair and longing in her marriage, her family, her regrets, failures and hard lessons learned. The most natural and pure of physically intimacy ensues without ever leading to a kiss.
After exchanging numbers on a pretense, they go their separate ways – Adam to his devoted but uncomplicated girlfriend, Julia to the family wedding her husband wouldn’t attend. As they process and act on exciting new feelings, Adam wrestles with his relationship and career path. Julia, buoyed and inspired, in a raw and uncompromising moment of candor, attempts to reveal to her emotionally-evasive husband how she really feels. She tears at old wounds, fighting against the malaise that’s enveloped their relationship.
When Adam and Julia agree to meet again at a hotel feelings are laid bare, physically and emotionally, and they’re forced to re-evaluate themselves and each other in an unbroken and honest denouement.
An epilogue reveals Julia’s new life, and Adam’s newfound honesty and attempt at humility. Neither has become perfect, but they’re both on very different courses.
