Vera remembers a time when polite society danced long into the night and the stores were stocked with exotic fruits and foreign wines.
That was long ago. Now the streets of Leningrad teem with people lining up for canned goods.
And there are rumors spreading….
They say doctors are poisoning their patients. They say the Jews are behind it all. There are stories of mass deportations being planned and of dangerous times ahead. Everyone looks to Stalin before making a move. Everyone trusts the Party and its infinite goodness. Surely no evil can harm the Soviet people while Stalin is at the helm. No doubt the deportations are justified and the Jews earned whatever punishment is coming their way.
But Vera is not so sure. And she cannot say anything….
