June 05, 2018What I liked
I loved the intimate nature of the material. I as the audience member felt like I was getting a first hand look at the real history of the character’s life. It felt very personal and familiar even though my own experience growing up was very different than that of the character.
The story telling was fantastic. The way she went from one character to the next was Great! Her command of the accents of her Haitian mother, Jamaican hairdresser, bullying classmates, the lady from Queens NY, just fabulous and entertaining!
What I didn't like
I didn’t find anything that was grossly wrong with this piece. If I was held down and forced to come up with something…anything that I think could improve the piece…maybe the opening could be shorter. I thought it went on just a hair too long. But that’s it. The rest was a delight!
My overall impression
This is a Great show performed by a Wonderfully talented actress. The show is not about her hair really, it’s about how a young girl navigates her world and how her hair influences that navigation. It’s a beautifully heartfelt story that I think anyone from any background can find enlightening.
