The story of black women and their hair is sacred. It was a wonderful surprise to walk into the theatre and realize this was going to be a journey onstage one does not see. I loved having the Haitian Black Women perspective on coming to love and relish in our natural hair. It can be hard to break colonial ways of thinking and brainwashing and Ella sheds it all onstage. The more black women see our similarities the more powerful we are as a collective. Ella touched on old truths, history, cultural stereotypes and family opinions to show how it can be a battle for one to be their authentic self. I was moved by her success to donjust that. As a woman with naturally curly hair who suffered the indignities of what had to be done to keep it straight and in style during my teen years, I certainly appreciate the sentiments Ella Turenne expressed during her show, "Love, Locs & Liberation." Her goal as a big and beautiful black woman was to share how spiritually uplifting it becomes when you realize you are not your hair, but the soul within that shines brightly no matter what may cover your head. I always knew how much work black women and girls could put into their hair. What I didn't understand is why. This show does a GREAT job at showing the depths hair decisions have for many in that community and how those play out either consciously or unconsciously. Being a white male with a close shaved haircut, I don't think I'll ever grasp the full of scope of this topic, but because of this show I definitely have a greater understanding of it.... full review

Excellent! This show was better than I'd hoped it would be from the fun music that had me bobbing my head before the show even started to Ella Turenne's enthusiastic, energetic entrance. This spirited pep kept a smile on my face throughout except when Ella treated us to intimate heartache and hardships in her life which she presented with pure vulnerability and grace.... full review
