My overall impression

I loved watching this show. I hadn’t known anything about Joumana Haddad and the play revealed her life and the challenges of many Arab women in ways that I hadn’t previously considered. I especially appreciated the imagination and humor in Nagham Wehbe’s adaptation and direction, which incorporated dance sequences, documentary video, and a humorous dumb show that opened the play. She wisely uses a multicultural cast to emphasize the point that these women could be anyone and this story is above all one of human hearts reacting to circumstances. Cynthia Yelle, who plays the central woman, is a star and she lights up all her scenes. She brings a depth and mystery to her interactions and she dances beautifully. And I really enjoyed all the choreography by Calista Ruiz. This theater that reaches across cultures and educates us all about our common humanity is so meaningful right now and I was so happy to come. I’ll never think of Scheherazade the same way again
