Staging the Existentialist idea of fragmentation of Self, the play splinters the protagonist’s personality by using several actresses to portray different aspects of one person. This approach was unique and extremely effective.
What I didn't like
This was a pristine performance. I have no suggestions for improvement. The play was powerful and creative. It is clearly a contender for a festival award.
My overall impression
A creative, avant-garde approach to the issue of female identity and voice in an oppressive, patriarchal world (notice the word world, not culture), Confessions of an Arab Woman delivers a powerful punch that exposes both the personal realities and stereotypes endured by a contemporary Lebonese feminist. This play takes the experience of one woman and universalizes it to all women to emphasize that misogyny and oppression are issues shouldered by women worldwide and are not unique to one particular culture or religion.
