What I liked
The lead actress is captivating as the good-natured but fierce Mary. Her husband also gave a strong performance, as short as it was. In what felt like 5 minutes you are made to care about the two of them. They flirt and fuss over each other in a very natural way that makes the subsequent crises hit the audience just that much harder. Florence Nightengale was also a great antithesis to Mary with a memorable performance. The period costumes were great too.
What I didn't like
The off-duty nurses reading Mary’s autobiography were a touch corny. I wouldn’t want them eliminated, but with an extension I think some minor rewrites would perfect the show.
My overall impression
A brisk and entertaining retelling of an underrated historical figure. Told with humor and cutting dialogue. I highly recommend it. Check out Mary Seacole’s entry in the Rejected Princesses book for a few more fun details about her.
