Four young women attend a support group for so-called “manic pixie dream girls” in this gleefully postmodern pop culture romp. Some reject or redefine their labels, while others accept the burdens and boons of tropedom. All must grapple with the implications of their own fictitiousness — some with more success than others.
This one-woman multimedia experience introduces a geek girl, a dancer, a lovable nut job and a blonde bombshell, then shakes up their comfy routines by bringing the unlikely group together. Sure, it’s a loving critique of gender representation in popular media, but there’s also live music, physical comedy, cute rom com boys and fourth-wall tomfoolery.
This evening-length work premiered at the 2015 Tulsa Fringe Festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at Living Arts of Tulsa. The production earned performer Anna Bennett the award for Best Actress at the 2016 Pittsburgh Fringe Festival.
