What I liked
The use of collaged poster board visual aids and signs was a brilliant choice in conveying the grass roots campaign of the story, also serving as a character device.
What I didn't like
For me, first preview felt slightly under-rehearsed; I’m sure the show has found its sea legs for the rest of the run!
My overall impression
Ernest Kearney’s “My Alamo War” is an unforgettable journey into the seedy heart of 1980s Hollywood, and a mission to bring to justice the Alamo Christian Foundation, a Pentacostal group, posing as an extension of the Jesus Movement of the 60s and 70s. The Alamos and their followers scoured the streets of Hollywood for the lost, desperate and destitute, shuttling them off to evening services an hour away in Saugus, CA.
In this performance, I couldn’t help but imagine Kearney as Captain Ahab aboard his Pequod (a Dodge Dart) in search of his White Whale: cult leader, Tony Alamo. Kearney’s mission: to erase any trace of this organization from the streets of Los Angeles. What follows is an intriguing vigilante mission for truth and justice and a journey to this quirky Everyman’s self-discovery.
